Description
2008 Mercedes-Benz Vario 818D – Armoured by MacNeillie
Ex-British MOD Nuclear Convoy Escort Vehicle
Offered as a base vehicle: £100,000
Built for Nuclear Convoys. Ready for Anything.
In 2008, Britain’s Ministry of Defence Police Special Escort Group required vehicles tough enough to accompany the nation’s nuclear convoys. The answer was the Mercedes-Benz Vario 818D, armoured and converted by S. MacNeillie & Son.
These vehicles carried out one of the most demanding roles on UK roads. Today, released to private ownership for the first time, they represent an opportunity to own a genuine nuclear convoy escort vehicle — and transform it into the ultimate survival tool.
The Legendary Vario Platform
At its heart, this is a Mercedes Vario 818D powered by the 4.2 litre OM904 diesel engine.
This engine is legendary:
-
Known as the “million mile engine” thanks to its durability.
-
Proven in fleet use around the world for decades.
-
Designed to carry heavy payloads reliably, day after day.
-
Simple, serviceable, and built to last.
Paired with a 6-speed manual gearbox and a gross vehicle weight of 7,500 kg, the Vario is a platform you can truly rely on. For anyone serious about survival or long-term resilience, there’s arguably no better vehicle base.
